Chapter Nine
Danny tossed and turned all night, his dreams filled with visions of ghosts chasing him along dark tunnels. The last thing he wanted was to put his friends in jeopardy. He wondered if it was best to continue this journey on his own.
Danny rolled over to see his companions were still sleeping soundly. Seeking solitude, he slipped away from his friends and settled down comfortably on a grassy mound. He exhaled, telling himself to clear his mind for the task at hand.
He fingered the smooth edge of the Translocator, but stopped when a sound from behind startled him. It was Bellan, who during the course of the journey had become Danny’s silent shadow. As she proceeded to cover his face in big, wet licks, Danny thought about how great it would be if the garden gnomes let Bellan come home with him.
As he allowed his thoughts to linger on his family, Danny wondered what it would be like to live in Gnomesville permanently. To never see a sunset again. Never get wet from the fresh drops of rain. Or see his family again.
Danny returned his concentration to the Translocator. Fear gripped him as he wondered what he’d do if he ended up stranded in some other unknown part of Gnomesville. Finally, he gathered up enough confidence to do it. “What have I got to lose?” he said to Bellan, who’d been watching his every move in curiosity. As if sensing his fear, she nudged him gently for reassurance; then rested her head in his lap.
Danny blinked, trying to focus his thoughts. Something brushed against his consciousness, like a finger trailing over his skin. He felt it again, but this time it was stronger, intensifying into a tendril of thought through which he felt a growing sense of anticipation. It was if an invisible wall surrounding his thoughts had fallen away, allowing him the freedom to reach out with his mind. Gently, he directed his focus towards the Golden Orb River.
Danny closed his eyes and blew on the Translocator, holding his breath in anticipation. Disappointed, he remained motionless, and frustrated. Frowning, he set aside all distracting thoughts and again returned his concentration towards the River. He took a deep breath and reached into the farthest corners of his consciousness, trying to find where the pipe’s powers resided. Again, the tendril touched his mind, but this time there was a sense of desperation. Urgency.
Suddenly, it was as though a shutter had opened in his mind. A strong beam of light engulfed him and Bellan. Soon they were floating, higher and higher until they were hundreds of feet above ground. Never before had he felt so exhilarated. Danny imposed a focus; a focus to draw back on the elation he was feeling and concentrate on finding the River. Within seconds, he was high above a dense forest and climbing rapidly. The trees below were tiny specks. The air was chilly too. In the distance was a wispy golden line, then a gigantic waterfall.
